Pour la première fois, l’IFAO, Institut français d’archéologie orientale ouvre ses portes et nous invite à découvrir les derniers trésors mis au jour par ses équipes.
La plus vaste et prestigieuse nécropole de l’Egypte antique, à 30 km au sud du Caire, n’a pas encore livré tous ses secrets. Depuis dix ans, l’archéologue Vassil Dobrev fouille un ensemble
de tombes appartenant à des prêtres de l’Ancien Empire : leurs chapelles funéraires sont de véritables oeuvres d’art construites il y a plus de 4000 ans. Inscriptions, ornements, sarcophages. les
trésors exhumés sont protégés par un toit métallique et enfermés pour éviter d’éventuels pillages.
À 800 km au sud du Caire, un autre chantier de l’IFAO est mené depuis vingt-cinq ans en plein
désert occidental : l’oasis de Douch. C'est ici qu’a été trouvé le plus important trésor en or découvert depuis celui de Toutankhamon ; c’est également ici que quatre cents statuettes de bronze –
représentant principalement le dieu Osiris – ont été exhumées d’un temple effondré. L’archéologue Michel Wuttmann, qui dirige ce chantier de fouille, nous montre ces petites merveilles, sans
doute des objets offerts au temple par des fidèles. Avec l’équipe de Béatrix Midant-Reynes, directrice de l’IFAO, nous partons sur les traces des premiers Égyptiens qui y vécurent, il y a plus de
cinq millénaires.
L’IFAO et ses chercheurs s’intéressent à toutes les époques de l’histoire égyptienne ; ainsi, le
dernier chantier concerne la période islamique, et l’oeuvre d’un grand personnage qui marqua l’histoire arabe : Saladin. Ce chef militaire fit bâtir, il y a plus de huit cents ans, une grande
muraille pour protéger la nouvelle capitale du Caire des armées croisées. Depuis dix ans, l’archéologue Stéphane Pradines s’affaire à exhumer cet édifice de pierre médiéval de 12 km de long, qui
ne servit finalement jamais à défendre la ville -Saladin fut vainqueur des croisés à Hattin, puis à Jérusalem- et fut, dans les siècles qui suivirent sa construction, enseveli sous les poubelles
des habitants. Aujourd’hui, après avoir retiré des centaines de tonnes d’ordure, le monument se révèle intact.
